The consent form I signed in 2012 actually states another brand of multi-focal lens, Tecnis, no mention of Mplus. The only mention of MPlus lenses is in the patient info folder. Why not on the form I signed? The consent form states "the multi-focal lenses may not be a good option for those who do detailed close work". I was never questioned by OE on this, but they were aware my job is based around close work using power machinery at close range and quality of sight for this is essential for safety and accuracy.

Once I realised OE were fobbing me off, I wrote to Oculentis in May '13, detailing my symptoms and unacceptable level of poor vision along with all the visual disturbances. They did reply, apologising for the inconvenience caused and explained that the side effects are due to the multifocal design. There was no mention of reporting my complaint to the MHRA and I have not heard from them since.

When phoning surgeon’s offices trying to find someone to correct me, I was told by Julian Stevens' practice manager from Moorfields, that he refuses to use the MPlus +3 which OE used for me, due to very high failure rates, but uses the MPlus +1.5 as it has a lower failure rate.

In 2013 I googled problems re MPlus and found just a few forum posts slating them, from patients with symptoms similar to mine, but I couldn’t find much from surgeons.

Oculentis should have reported the problems they are aware of to the MHRA

Presumably Keith Bates is referring to surgeons bank account statements when he says everyone is happy to share all the good things that have happened to them with lenses. He sure isn't talking about the patients!

After a lovely evening, hosted by Topcon, UK distributors for Oculentis, happy pink cheeked ophthalmic surgeons rave about the wonders of MPlus lenses!

Published on YouTube Jan 9, 2014:

"LENTIS user group meeting for all Mplus and Mplus Comfort users. Sharing best practice and finding out about the Mplus revolution."

@ 3.06 mins I recognised Paul Rosen, medicolegal expert for Optical Express in Stephanie Holloway’s court case last September. Notice that he's wearing glasses for distance - as are a number of those present!

@ 2.30 mins Bruce McCleod (incorrectly spelled McCloud) says:
The other Multifocal lens I’ve used seem to have a tendency to… urm... side effects such as glare and haloes, but the patients I’ve operated on with the MPlus have all been very happy, with very very little in the way of... urm... visual aberrations…"

@ 3.30 mins Keith Bates says:
"Fantastic atmosphere...everyone very happy to share all the good things that have happened to them with lenses…

May I humbly suggest that the time spent at these 'meetings' would be of more value to all concerned if the unhappy patients fitted with MPlus lenses were able to share all the bad things that have happened to them with lenses

Replied by Robin on topic Refractive lens exchange. Is it worth it ?!

Optical Express make much on their website of the savings you will make by no longer needing glasses or contact lenses! There is even a calculator on their website for you to use!

Since the (final) email from Mr Hannan when it was for me to let him know if I wanted to be seen again by OE at any point in the future! !!!!! (Up to me as always to make all the runningI) I have not been in touch with them.

I have let them off the hook? Yes, I believe I have. I have lost ALL trust in them that is for sure! and could not recommend to them to anyone.

I have been buying contact lenses from an online source which I discovered while waiting more than six weeks for trial contact lenses from Optical Express during my treatment (on more than one occasion) during my three years plus course of treatment.

It would appear that you can now have an eye check in conjunction with this online company from a well known High Street Optician (not Optical Express). Well that will be a good thing. What is the best base curve having had lens replacement, yag laser and lasek and more?! Any help will be much appreciated. Optical Express gave me a dozen trial contact lenses to try but no one has ever checked these on my eye.

As well as the cost of contact lenses there is, of course the cost for drops and supplements for dry eye (not to mention the further laser and vitrectomy) I spend much more on my eyes now than I ever did before my first lens replacement!

I thought by having lens replacement I would be avoiding the need for laser. WRONG! and I have experienced many issues that I was not warned about, like vitreous problems after lens replacement and yag laser. The quality of vision that I now have is disappointing to say the least plus the ongoing discomfort I experience daily.

Optical Express are currently advertising "laser lens replacement" as being "non invasive". This is dishonest and misleading as there is an incision made to the eye, tissue is removed and an implant inserted. This is NOT "non-invasive surgery" and it is irresponsible of them to describe it as such.

"Non-invasive Procedure Definition. A non-invasive procedure is a conservative treatment that does not require incision into the body or the removal of tissue."

Hazel I now find that my eyelids feel very heavy after being awake just a few hours. This occurred quite soon after having my bits of plastic fitted.

Is there anyone on this site who had their procedures done on the 1st and 8th Feb 2013 at Westfield London? I would like to know how you got on.

The other thing I find strange is that when I wake up in the dark and make my way to the landing to turn the light on I can see in the dark a very fine mesh like looking at a fence from distance. The shape is like a dimple on a golf ball but smaller. It is perfectly symmetrical and I think it might be in the manufacture of the lenses. It is a bit worrying because it is occurring more and more.

Other than the fact that you don't get 20/20 vision with these lenses, but do get halos, floaters and starbursts, are there any other problems come to light. as I seem to have missed this article so a bit worried. I have MF30's.

Thanks Sasha x

Good for you Sasha.

Well done.

Any supplier should consider the impact on their business of dealing with a potentially unscrupulous company that may put sales before patient care.

Some "market leader" Optical Express turned out to be.
