I am horrified to read what Jan said in this interview with the Express in 2012:
"Sally booked an appointment at an Optical Express clinic in west London where she was told she was a suitable candidate for implantable intraocular lenses.
Last month both her eyes were treated two days apart. Professor Jan Venter, Sally’s surgeon, says: “We used a very sophisticated artificial lens which corrects long and intermediate vision and problems with reading.
“The treatment is ideal for the over 40s who can experience quite dramatic improvements in their vision.”"

I talk to some of the most prestigious ophthalmic surgeons, all of whom have told me they would not perform RLE surgery on anyone under mid fifties unless there was a very good reason!
Not forgetting that I am contacted every week by increasing numbers of OE patients who have problems with these lenses!

Hi Kay
Alex George called me but I missed it and he left a message saying we should discuss what could be done to correct my eyes after RLE.
I contacted Sasha for advice and she told me to email him and not to discuss anything over the phone. I sent an email saying I had been told there was nothing to be done so what did he propose to do?
Funny enough he never replied.

I also had a call from David Mungall who caught me off guard yesterday offering me a consult with Alex George who performed my RLE surgery, with rail travel paid for myself and a companion.
I rang Mr Hugh Kerr and left a voicemail telling him I wasn't interested in seeing anyone with OE....

Unemployment will be too good for them. I just hope they are out of this world.
Regarding that letter, I too had the EXACT same letter emailed to me.

Kay,
This is a template letter as it is the same word for word as I received back from this clown.
To add insult to injury they cannot even be bothered to write a personal reply to you. Hannan just wants to telephone you to give you some more BULLSH*T
I do hope you gave him the same response I did. I cannot wait for the day these idiots have to sign on for unemployment benefit.

I sent an email to David Moulsdale this morning and received this reply from Stephen Hannan - is he stupid or blind?

Subject: Optical Express
Dear Ms Doughty,
Thank you for contacting our Chief Executive Officer in your email of today's date. In my capacity as the Clinical Services Director, I have been passed your email and will now offer a response.
Whilst I acknowledge that you have regrettably lost faith in Optical Express I would welcome the opportunity to understand the reasons why. This will enable me to address any issues that you might have so that we can move forward with any on-going clinical care which you may require.
This said, if there is a particular time that you would be available to engage in telephone conversation please confirm by return and I or my colleague Mr Mungall will be pleased to call you.
With the information available to us at this point in time we would respectfully decline your request to be referred to an external Ophthalmologist at the cost of Optical Express. We would also decline your request to be refunded the fee which you paid to Optical Express to undergo treatment.
Yours sincerely,
Stephen Hannan MCOptom

Update on my 1 month post op Lasik Enhancement check up at OE on top of RLE last October.
Optom confidently assured me "Eyes healing well no problem... bla bla bla!". Besides being dry, when I asked why can't I read properly she checked prescription again and advised I buy a pair of +1 glasses and said if things not settled by my 3 month check up they could do yet ANOTHER enhancement
Because I now understand that I shouldn't have been given laser treatment with RA I said I wanted a second opinion. She brushed it aside and said not to worry, they'd do all the right tests before going ahead, and no point in seeing anyone at the moment because it's too early.
I said I was confused that I was told before RLE that I wasn't suitable for laser but now they're happy to give it to me. She said it's a "different kind of laser" :S

If anyone has undergone RLE Explant at Optical Express I would be most interested in hearing the outcome of your operation.
I am due to have this procedure done by Optical Express, but as their previous operations on my eyes have failed I am extremely cautious about committing to this, so any info regarding OE's success rate of Explant surgery would be very helpful.
I have spoken to an independent surgeon (not OE) who has apparently performed hundreds of RLE ops and has only had to do an Explant ONCE.
(This indicates a highly satisfactory success rate and should be very encouraging to anyone needing surgery.)
It would therefore follow that the more Explants an Optical Express surgeon does suggests a higher percentage of failures in the original surgery.
I only wish that I had been as cautious as I am now BEFORE visiting OE!

I was chatting to someone today who had RLE in Ireland and they asked me how much I paid for my procedure. I paid €3500. They had the same lenses and paid just under €2900, plus €5000 med ins, total €7900. This was just 3 months before I had my surgery!
Me thinks something stinks here
admin: Recent information alleges that OE optoms receive 1.5% commission of the price paid by the patient with 0.5% going to the sales 'counsellor', explaining why these two work in tandem pushing to get the highest amount of money as possible from the patient.
I will be providing more details on this soon.
